Behavior Disorders
Behavioral Disorders
Behavioral disorders involve more than just occasional temper tantrums or defiant behaviors. Genuine childhood behavioral disorders are usually much more serious.
A child with diagnosable behavior disorders experiences behavioral problems that become severe enough to interfere with school performance as well as relationships with friends and family.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Common symptoms of ADHD include:
- Difficulty focusing
- Difficulty processing information quickly and accurately
- Disorganization
- Difficulty following instructions
- Talking constantly
- Inability to sit still
- Trouble participating in quiet activities
- Impatience
- Blurting out answers
- Saying inappropriate comments
- Doing things without considering the consequences
Although medication can be useful in reducing the symptoms in a number of children, parenting interventions can be more helpful in reducing a lot of behavior problems associated with hyperactivity and impulsivity. Sometimes children with ADHD also have an oppositional defiant disorder.
