Couples Counseling

If your relationship is not perfect, it can be difficult to admit, and it will take strength. Many couples will pursue counseling to help better their relationship. Here are three common reasons couples seek counseling:
  1. Communication is negative - If communication has deteriorated, it's usually very hard to get it going back in the right direction. Negative communication includes anything that leaves one partner feeling depressed, insecure, neglected, or wanting to withdraw from the conversation. This also includes the tone of the conversation. It's important to know that it's not always what you say, but how you say it.
  2. When one or both partners wish to have an affair, or one partner has already had an affair - Recovering from an affair is not impossible, but it's going to take a lot of work. It takes commitment as well as the willingness to forgive and move forward. There's no magic formula to enable one to recover from an affair. If both individuals, however, are committed to the therapy process and are being honest, the marriage might be salvaged. It may be determined that it's healthier for both individuals to move onward.
  3. When the couple is just "occupying the same space" - When couples are now more like roommates rather than a married couple, it may indicate a need for a counselor. This doesn't mean if the couple has to do everything together lest they be in trouble. If communication is lacking along with conversation and intimacy (this includes any other elements the couple feels may be important) and they feel they just co-exist, this may be an indication that a skilled counselor is needed.
