Grief / Bereavement Therapy

Grief is a natural response when you lose someone or something that's important to you. You'll feel a variety of emotions, including sadness or loneliness. You might also experience it for a number of different reasons such as a relationship ending or losing your job.

Other life changes, including chronic illnesses or moving to a new home, can also end up leading to grief. Everyone has a different way of dealing with grief, but if you understand your emotions, take care of yourself, and seek support, you can heal much faster.
  • Denial: When you first learn of a loss, it's normal to think, "This isn't happening." You may feel shocked, but this is a temporary way to deal with the surge of overwhelming emotion. It's nothing more than a defense mechanism.
  • Anger: When reality sets in, you're faced with the true pain of the loss. At first, you may feel frustrated and helpless, and then these feelings later turn into anger. You may end up directing it towards other people, a higher power, or life itself. It's natural to be angry with a loved one who died and left you alone.
  • Bargaining: At this stage, you ponder what you might have done to prevent the loss.
  • Depression: Sorrow sets in as you realize the loss and its effect on your life. Signs of depression include sleeping issues, weeping, and a decreased appetite. You may feel overwhelmed, regretful, and lonely.
  • Acceptance: This is the final stage of grief where you accept the truth regarding your loss. You now realize it can't be changed, and although you still feel sad, you're now able to start moving forward with your own life.
